Designing the Space

After gathering all the programme data, it’s time to develop a high-level architecture vision. This step can help clarify the purpose and ensure support for business drivers when developing architecture; plus it gives key stakeholder commitment for work to be undertaken on it.

An architectural vision should depict the desired look and feel of the end product, along with planned functionality. This will help gain stakeholder approval of architecture work while providing a consistent look throughout all future releases of architecture.

Once your vision has been clarified, it is advisable to start sketching diagrams, also known as bubble diagrams, that provide a visual guide for physically planning out spaces within a space. They can help explore potential connections between spaces like refuge areas or workspaces and circulation between them – this type of diagramming will especially aid you when determining how much space is required and whether this space can accommodate furnishings as well as overall traffic flows within your building.

Utilising an architecture framework to understand requirements, an Architecture Vision should be created that offers a high-level aspirational view of the end architecture product. Documenting it within an Architecture Repository serves as a prelude for more detailed Architecture Definition documents.

An architect brief can serve as an invaluable way to communicate with stakeholders and get everyone on the same page about what the desired architecture should entail, while simultaneously decreasing risk that the actual result could differ significantly from what was envisioned at its creation.

Architecture Vision should outline the targeted frameworks and architecture principles that will be employed when creating release architectures. Furthermore, documenting any technologies being utilized allows architects to plan future releases with these technologies in mind.

No matter whether it is possible to fulfill all the goals outlined in an Architecture Vision is immaterial; having such an ideal goal serves to motivate team members and increase the chance that architecture will meet these objectives in future releases. Therefore, its review and update should occur regularly throughout agile development process.

This phase provides high-level definitions of baseline and target architectures from a business, information systems and technology perspective. These definitions are stored in an Architecture Repository organized according to frameworks and principles established in the Preliminary Phase (see 5.5 Scoping the Architecture).

An effective approach is to create a solution concept diagram which succinctly depicts all major components of the proposed architecture, making it easier for stakeholders to comprehend its benefits while building consensus about its scope of works.

Identification and documentation of change drivers and opportunities that will shape the scope of architecture work is necessary, along with initial levels of risk (e.g., catastrophic, critical, minor and negligible). Results should then be included into a Statement of Architecture Work document.

At this stage, architects should review their architecture work against the enterprise strategy and goals as documented in the Preliminary Phase. Furthermore, architects should document technologies targeted for use in future releases to assist with designing those architectures for later releases.

Architecture Vision is an important TOGAF deliverable that provides a high-level view of what the end architecture product will be. It should be produced early in a project’s lifecycle to assist stakeholders’ communication. Furthermore, this document serves as an essential precursor for more detailed Architecture Definition documents.

A vision can either be created as an independent activity, or part of the ADM Preliminary Phase process (Preliminary Phase). Either way, its content must include an outline description of baseline and target environments from both business and technology perspectives; approach and deliverables required; approach method used; etc.

Architects should outline the technologies that will be employed when building architecture, as this information helps design it for later releases and release cycles. This step is particularly essential if the architecture will be deployed into a cloud or hybrid environment and this information should be documented as part of its vision statement or Statement of Architecture Work for performance tracking purposes.
