Paper Box Packaging is the most common type of packaging you will come across. We all use them—moving to a new home, sending packages, even for storage.
So what do you need to know if you need to make some Paper Box Packaging?
When we develop a box with a client, we need to understand five key things:
1. Box Size
The first thing you need to know is the dimensions of your box. In the packaging industry, we always refer to the inner dimensions of a box rather than the outer dimensions.
To measure the box correctly, you need to measure the length, width, and then the depth. We always recommend measuring these dimensions in millimeters. For example 600 mm x 300 mm x 250 mm.
Keep in mind that the size of the box you want will affect the minimum order quantity. For example, the smaller the box, the higher the minimum order because you can get more small Paper Box Packaging from a single piece of cardboard when the design is cut out.
2. Box Style
The second thing you should know is the style of box you need. When we talk about box style, we mean the type or shape of the box you want. In Europe, the styles you can choose from are standardized within the packaging industry by the Federation of European Corrugated Manufacturers (FEFCO).
The most common box styles you will come across are the 0201 and 0427 styles. You’ll sometimes hear the latter referred to as “pizza box style”.
3. Sheet Grade
Next, you need to know what grade of plank you need. Corrugated cardboard is available in different material grades, with different paper weights and finishes.
Standard paper finishes include vellum, white, and test paper (recycled). Paper thickness starts at 125gsm and increases to 300gsm.
In addition to the finish of the board, you will also need to decide on the groove. This determines the depth of the board. You can also choose from a variety of different grooves depending on the strength of the material you need. The most common groove profiles are the C groove (3.5mm – 3.7mm thick) and B groove (2.7mm – 2.9mm). You can choose from single, double or triple layer Paper Box Packaging.
4. Plain or Printed?
You’ll also need to decide if your box will be a solid color or printed with some kind of reference or even your branding.
For the full effect, you can choose to print both the inside and outside of the box. The number of designs and colors you need will affect the printing process and associated costs, such as printing a stereo.
5. Quantity you need
Finally, it is always useful to know the number of paper box Packaging required for each size and design. This helps guide the manufacturing options you will have and will affect any volume discounts that can be offered to you.
