Introduction

Fatigue and sore muscles have become a part of our everyday lives with the intense pressure that most of our 9-5 jobs puts us through. A soothing hot water bath seems like the perfect way to unwind after a long day. What if you were to do so amidst the breathtaking vistas of the majestic Himalayas and verdant valleys? The journey to the natural hot springs of Kheerganga trek in the Parvati valley of Himachal Pradesh is strenuous but so much more rewarding that it has become one of the most popular treks in northern India.

Kheerganga Trek – A Perfect Adventure for Beginners

Often considered as a trek for beginners at an altitude of 2960 metres, this 12 km excursion can be undertaken in a single day or as a two day trip according to convenience. It takes you past the lush pine forests, carmine apple orchards, and  pristine rivers, streams and waterfalls, each contributing to the location’s sublimity. Legends state that the sheer beauty of the Parvati valley made Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati reside here for over a thousand years. Undoubtedly, the picturesque landscape is comparable to heaven on earth because of the aura  it radiates and the sense of peace it offers.

On a bus from Bhuntar, one reaches the quaint little village of Barshaini which serves as the base camp and provides the basic amenities such as medical shops, lodging facilities, dhabas and taxi stands. This also happens to be the last motorable pathway in the area, after which there are primarily three routes to the end point of this trek. The most preferred course is through the Nakthan village that offers a stunning panoramic picture of the hills on one side and the flowing Parvati river on the left, making it the ideal spot for photography enthusiasts. However, if you need to rest for a bit or stay the night, one needs to take the route through the Tosh village, which ultimately converges with the first road. The third route passes by the Kalga village which lets you experience the best of the local ‘pahaadi’ cultures and scrumptious meals of rajma and chawal. For the morning journey through the dense alpine forest area, it is recommended that you hire a tour guide because one may literally get lost in the tranquillity of the woods.

Rudra Nag Waterfalls – Nature’s Marvelous Creation

On the way to the summit, you come across the Rudra Nag waterfalls, a serpent-like waterbody which truly defines nature’s marvellous creations. A dip in the cool water is a welcome refreshment. Apart from a treat for nature lovers, many devotees visit the Rudra Nag temple for religious purposes. It is also known for its spectacular and beautifully carved interiors. There are dharamshalas run by monks and sadhus who offer accommodation at affordable prices and the food available at the nearby dhabas satisfy the hunger pangs, providing the energy for the rest of the trip.

It does get a little steep at the end of the journey but nothing that is not manageable, and the view that is in store for you more than makes up for the tiring walk upwards. The pious Shiva temple and the Parvati Kund have rich mythological bearings. Some believe that while Lord Shiva was meditating in this valley for over 3000 years, Sheshnag, the serpentine demigod, ensured that the hot spring (kund) provided warmth and comfort to the superior being. Another narrative that exists, tells us about the origin of the name ‘Kheerganga’ which translates to milky white holy water. Goddess Parvati mixed rice with the water sources in this region to ensure  perennial food supply for her younger son , Lord Kartikeya who was known to have meditated in the nearby caves. However, with the onset of Kalyug (the dark ages), Rishi Parashurama extracted the food particles so that humans wouldn’t kill each other over it, thus leaving behind the hot spring. A more scientific explanation is that the area is surrounded by dormant volcanoes and the sulphur from the mantle warms the water. Therefore it is advisable to not spend a long time dipping in this ‘natural jacuzzi’.

The Enchanting Parvati Kund – A Trek Highlight

Irrespective of the reasons one chooses to believe in, this is regarded as the highlight of the trek and is by far the most famous tourist destination. There is a wooden partition between the area reserved for ladies, offering complete privacy and a separate shower area to prevent contamination of the water. Some people are convinced that the water has magical restorative abilities that can heal skin ailments and soothe chronic muscle problems. Others simply come here to relax and lounge in the hot waters after a hectic hike. The calm atmosphere helps you de-stress and take a moment to yourself, which is hardly possible in cities.

Conclusion

The journey ends with the unique  experience of campfires and sleeping in tents under the starlit sky. The next day, a trip downwards to the exquisite hamlet of Kasol, is the perfect end to your short getaway. So pack your bags and get ready because the hills are calling!
