Autism services Ottawa offer children and their families a range of treatment options, such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) for one-to-one learning or speech therapy.
Every referral requires an up-to-date psychological/developmental assessment within two years of submission; otherwise a new assessment will be requested.
Education
Autism services Ottawa provide education that assists students in learning how to interact with others, develop social skills and gain independence. This may include one-on-one sessions with professionals or classroom activities in a group setting. Some autism services also work closely with families by offering home support or training services.
Recent advances in autism research and advocacy worldwide have coincided with an increased demand for services (7); however, this hasn’t always translated to increased availability of services in regions with limited resources.
Our study revealed significant variation in service delivery across sites, with various funding arrangements, service models, and levels of coverage among communities. This is likely the result of Canada’s federalist governance structure: where provincial governments primarily handle health, education and social services while federal funding serves merely as support (2).
Therapy
As autism awareness and advocacy have grown globally, so has the demand for policies to support families facing autism challenges. While various international responses have been put in place, progress remains slow and inconsistent – specific gaps include person-centredness, evaluation of economic costs and implementation mechanisms.
As many provincial autism services operate on a fee-for-service model that varies in terms of how much therapy is provided and who provides it, this can create financial challenges for families who do not have the means to afford ABA-based treatments as well as costly interventions such as speech and occupational therapies.
To address this challenge, a new system called Pathways Services Log was devised to organize unstructured data and facilitate comparisons across sites. Piloted by two research staff members at each site and refined via cross-site teleconferences, its final form was then tested to ensure it captured all service types offered by various programs.
Employment
Kerry’s Place provides adult supports and employment services to assist individuals with autism or developmental disabilities find jobs. Our supports include job coaching and training services, individual employment preparation services, career exploration & development activities as well as ongoing workplace support services.
Kerry’s Place is delighted to partner with Ready, Willing and Able (RWA), a federal program funded through Developmental Services Ontario Eastern Region that connects people with intellectual disabilities or autism to employment and community participation opportunities.
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based practice which uses systematic methods of study and practice to generate lasting behavioral change and foster skill development in children and adults alike. Community
Adults living with autism have access to various community services designed to aid them in leading fulfilling, connected lives. The goal is to assist them in finding their strengths, gifts and support needs – this may involve helping them overcome any social or economic hurdles which may impede this path.
Individuals with autism are susceptible to mental health issues at rates comparable to or higher than the general population. They may suffer from depression, anxiety and panic disorder. Unfortunately, access to therapeutic services may be limited.
AccessOAP has recently been launched as an online portal to assist individuals and families in finding services tailored to their specific needs. Families registering their child(ren) in Ontario Autism Program can access foundational family services; entry to school programs for students with developmental disabilities; ongoing core clinical services as well as receiving an expert psychiatric assessment regarding autism from an experienced child psychiatrist, adolescent or adult psychiatrist who are knowledgeable.
